Prosthetic mitral valve thrombosis,malfunction, and paroxysmal mitral regurgitation

Intermittent dysfunction of mechanical mitral valve prosthesis is an uncommon condition. It carries serious clinical implications if unrecognized. Here, we present a case of a 28‐year‐old female with a history of rheumatic multivalvular disease, for which she had undergone double valve replacement and tricuspid annuloplasty. Six months later, she presented with heart failure. Clinical examination revealed intermittent loss of closing clicks followed by a pansystolic murmur at the apex, suggestive of mitral prosthetic valve dysfunction. We highlight the echocardiographic findings of paroxysmal mitral valvular regurgitation secondary to prosthetic valve malfunction secondary to prosthetic valve thrombosis.     

Long-Term Tobacco Smoking and Mucociliary Clearance

The rate of mucociliary clearance was estimated from the removal of inhaled radioactive particles in 79 elderly subjects of whom 50 had healthy lungs and 29 had respiratory impairment that was obstructive in 13 and restrictive in 16. The 29 impaired subjects had on the average a faster clearance than the normal group, a difference that almost approached significance (5% level) at six hours after the inhalation of the aerosol. The obstructed subjects showed the fastest clearance with the restricted group intermediate between these and the normal group. No significant difference was found between the rates of clearance of smokers, nonsmokers, and exsmokers in either healthy or “diseased” groups.     

Leptospirosis among zebu cattle in farms in Kaduna State,Nigeria

ObjectiveTo assess the occurrence of Leptospira spp serovar Hardjo among Zebu cattle in some livestock producing areas of Kaduna State, Nigeria.MethodsSera samples were obtained from 164 Zebu breed of cattle above one year osf age in seven cattle farms were screened for antibodies to Leptospira spp. serovar Hardjo using Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).ResultsAntibodies to Leptospira spp. serovar Hardjo were detected in eighteen (10.98%) out of the 164 animals sampled. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in seropositivity between the different age groups or between different Zebu breeds.ConclusionThe presence of Leptospirosis among the Zebu breeds of cattle may poses a threat to livestock production and has public health implication due to its zoonotic potential.
